About the Artist

THE ARTIST,

WENDY WH HAZEN

Wendy spent her childhood in Maine and the metropolitan area of New York City.  She started painting on her bedroom wall with crayons and finger paint, much to her mother’s dismay.  Taking painting and art classes whenever possible, Wendy graduated with a major in Studio Design and a minor in musical theater.

After singing and dancing her way through her twenties in traveling theater companies, Wendy opened her own design studio, The Point Of It in Boothbay Harbor, Maine in 1982.  She designed coastal needlepoint; rugs, pillows, picture frames, eyeglass cases and belts. She hand painted many of the needlepoint canvas’ herself.  She also applied her coastal designs to hand knit sweaters as well.  In June of 2000 Wendy decided to resurrect her watercolor talents.  Her favorite subjects being water scenes, architecture and flowers, the New England coast, especially Cape Cod and Maine, became her muse.  “My style is realistic and my subject matter is a segment of the whole ‘picture’.  I like to focus on one or two blossoms of the flower versus the whole garden….especially the light, how it layers down through leaves, water, etc.”

Where do you go when you are an unknown and you want people to get to know you?  With the calendars, prints (offset lithograph & Gicleé), tiles, gift bags, note and gift cards needing to be sold so she could pay the mortgage, etc, the art show circuit became Wendy’s storefront.  She was doing approximately 50 plus shows a year for almost 9 years but this was not sustainable; painting and driving at the same time is not a good combination. Consequently, since 2009, Wendy has welcomed commissions, continued her painting and filling orders from her home studio via the internet, email or phone.

Wendy is a member of the Cape Cod Art Center; PAAM in Provincetown, MA; Naples Art Association in Naples, FL, The New England Watercolor Society;  and the National Watercolor Society.  Her work has been featured in different publications, gallery shows and private collections throughout the world.
